First quadrangle

The building work that led to the expansion of the church also resulted in the addition of a new wing on the Vrouwebroersstraat which housed a refectory and a library. Its luxurious limestone finishing and exquisite tower underline the importance of this particular project to the order. The new wing was also linked to the church and shortly thereafter the large wing on the Plotersgracht was extended to join up with the refectory wing. The religious wars of the 16th century brought a temporary halt to further building work and after the abolition of the order during the French Revolution, parts of the complex were rented out to private individuals as workshops and store rooms. The inner courtyard has now been completely cleared and work is in progress to restore this part of the former friary to its original glory.
